It is very commonly said that the most important resource any organisation has is human resource(is it a resource BTW).
I have, in a short span of time worked with several companies, in different industries, and all of them leading ones, supposedly the best ones around. And I loved being there.
But i have found each one of them not able to keep there employees engaged. Not many employees are thinking about there job as a role in a bigger system, working towards a goal. The passion for the work is missing. The willingness to run that extra mile is just not there. And i am talking TOP companies here.
And the ones who are engaged in with there company, working towards its goals, willingly, making there goal a subset of the company's goal, are the better performers, both in terms of numbers and in quality of work. They gain the hang of the business much quicker than the avg. non engaged employee, as he relatively spends far more time thinking about the business, and improvements.
These are the kind of people every organisation needs. Dedicated, capable employees, working in tune with the company's objectives.
These people are hard to find.
And i have seen people with these qualities are hard to retain, they jump jobs more frequently.
Companies are having a tough time understanding there expectations and responding to them.
Hiring smart people is tough, Keeping them engaged is tougher. And MONEY is not the only answer.

Very relevant blog, I must say, keeping today's high rate of Attrition in view.
Yes, some freshers use the companies as stepping stones, some just do their jobs and not carreer and some hop around for learning more from each company.
To the best of each. Today's mantra seems to be "Rolling stones should feel happy that they do not gather moss". Keep shining and polished and not rust yourself. So keeping this is mind, the companies also should make the best use of it.
But, I think those days are numbered, what with the advent of KPOs (Knowledge Process Outsourcing) era.Only the real scholars and geniuses will be hailed and harnessed.
I hear these days, to keep a good employee, companies are handing out initial incentives to them before actually they start working.
Good for them. Its high time the Bhouses realize that both employer and employees are complimentary to each other and pure trade wins hands down.
Intelligent introspection Viv.
What a company then needs is intelligent HR managers who know how to gauge talent and dedication during interviews. How did your HR interviews go? Do you think you were grilled for sincerity and dedication toward company goals? Signing a bond is an answer?
In any offer, there are certain basic elements that need to be evaluated. Money, position, job profile, location, growth prospects, and work culture. Not in that order.
One picks up the job, if he finds a reasonable mix of all these.
Picking up the right ppl is one answer. But it does not end there, i am a motivated employee today for my co. Two months back, i was looking for a change.
I voiced out my concerns, and they gave me a different position, so i am happy and working to my potential. 6 months down the line i will again atart getting restless, i'll need a newer challange. And here if the organisation is not able to offer me something, i'll start getting dissatisfied with my job. I'll dis engage.
I dunno if many HR guys look at it the way i do. Theoritically, they try to match person's aspirations with co's goals. Practically it is not always possible.
Then it is a blog the print out of which should be dropped into the suggestion box of your HR department. :)
This is not a complaint.. I hope i make that very clear...
Are suggestion boxes made for complaints? [:o]
